Book 1
Eleven-year-old Linora Sue Morris, “Linnie”, has a way of noticing things other people pass right by: a lone shoe on the street, mismatched footprints in fresh mud, the way a closed curtain seems to shift when no one is watching. Her parents call her curious, her teachers report that she’s tenacious… but Linnie has always simply thought, “There must be a reasonable explanation for everything.”
Like when she makes a chilling discovery of abandoned items in an unexpected place, she is determined to solve the mystery of who the items belong to and why they were discarded.
And when a new couple moves into the weathered house at the end of Southview Court, Linnie pays attention. Mrs. Maynard, graceful and reserved, seems to carry a quiet sadness along with her gentle smile. Most neighbors keep their distance, but something about Mrs. Maynard’s presence tugs at Linnie like the beginning of a mystery she’s meant to solve.

Meanwhile, things at school have become unexpectedly complicated.
When Linne’s Science class starts a unit on evolution, she speaks up about her belief that the universe was created by God. Her teacher reprimands her, some classmates make fun of her, and others begin asking hard questions- questions that Linnie had never before been challenged to answer.
She’s always believed… because her parents believed. But suddenly that belief becomes something Linnie wants to understand, not just inherit.
Drawn to Mrs. Maynard’s steady wisdom and kindness, Linnie discovers an unexpected mentor: someone who treats her questions with seriousness, and who doesn’t talk down to Linnie like a child. As the two form a friendship, Linnie begins to see that the best answers often begin with curiosity, tenacity, and a sense of reasoning.
As she uncovers the answers for why she believes how she does, Linnie also uncovers the tender, complicated story behind the mysterious woman next door- one that will change the way she sees both God and people.
